Handy Hall Weekend ’14
The greatest want of the world is the want of men- men who will not be bought or sold; men who in their inmost souls are true and honest; men who do not fear to call sin by its right name; men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole; men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall – Ellen G. White.
Under the leadership of Head Dean, Mr. Jaymie Pottinger and his staff, The Gentlemen of Distinction, residents of the young men’s Residence Hall, demonstrated the aforementioned qualities through various programs and activities during their Handy Hall Weekend in February.
Using the overarching theme of “Reflecting the Past and Embracing the Future” individuals as well as various groups used their talents and abilities in poetry and music to celebrate those giants who were instrumental in the struggle for freedom and equality here and abroad, and on whose shoulders we stand.
Special guest artists from the group, Mutual Agreement , blended their voices with those of the young to make for an evening of musical tribute to the struggle of our past, the triumphs of our present, and the dreams of our future.
The Men of Distinction were again featured in the Sabbath Celebration worship service as they raised their voices in lofty songs of praise and adoration to their heavenly Father and loving redeemer. In addition to an all-male praise team called the Men of Valor, an all-male choral group conducted by Mr. Michael Jones also presented a wide range of beautiful music that transported our souls to the throne room of Heaven. Pastor Marquis Johns, Associate Pastor at the Breath of Life SDA Church, was the guest speaker for Sabbath Service.
The weekend was capped off by a delightful and entertaining Banquet. Various individuals gave a modern twist to some of the oldies with goodies made famous by artists such as the Temptations, Aretha Franklyn, and others. Mr. Theron Thomas, class of 2005 and member of Committed, winner of NBC’s 2010 Sing-Off Competition, delighted the crowd while they enjoyed a delectable meal.
The evening ended with the announcement of the first Handy Hall Falcon of the Year. This award acknowledges an individual that has contributed to and impacted PFA in a very significant manner over a period of time and has helped in the molding and development of the residents of Handy Hall. The 2014 recipient of this prestigious award was Mr. Kris Fielder.
