The science department at Pine Forge Academy is a model of scientific discovery and learning. Each experience in the classroom will create an interest in the world of science. Our department has qualified teachers, who will inspire and aid in the student’s inquiry. The laboratory equipment and supplies are current and incorporated into the learning process. We are also committed to adequately prepare each student to cover all the topics in their textbooks, for SAT, ACT or AP science subject tests, college preparation, or a future career in a science-related field.

Some of the activities or events associated with our department include:

Integrated Science
Integrated Science is a subject which is usually done by freshmen, and serves as a foundation that bridges the gap between science taught in the elementary school system and the high school system.

Investigation is done on topics in both life and physical sciences, and it includes basic chemistry, matter and energy interactions, cells, ecology, and space science. Students will understand the processes of scientific investigation and design, conduct, communicate about, and evaluate such investigations.

Biology/Honors Biology
Biology is a course usually taken by freshmen or sophomores and it is designed to allow students to examine organisms and acquaint themselves with the concepts and techniques involved in its study. It is a core course that is needed as a prerequisite for chemistry, physics and anatomy and physiology.

Honors biology has a more detailed and advanced approach to the subject, and it is offered to eligible candidates.

Chemistry/Honors Chemistry
Chemistry is usually taken by sophomores or juniors, and it is designed to provide a general introduction to chemical concepts. This course includes a study of matter, scientific calculations, study of atoms, molecules, the periodic table, chemical bonding, nomenclature, chemical equations, stoichiometry, states of matter, detailed study of the laws governing gases and solutions, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction reactions, and electrochemistry, and some organic and nuclear chemistry.

The honors class is more advanced and rigorous in the teaching approach and only eligible candidates are invited.

Physics
Physics is the study of matter and its physical relationships.  The course provides sufficient information for a student to continue physics instruction at the college level. Physics deepens the understanding of the structure and properties of materials and includes atoms, waves, light, electricity, magnetism and the role of energy, forces and motion. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on problem solving and laboratory skills. This class is usually taken by juniors and seniors.

Anatomy & Physiology
Anatomy & Physiology is an advanced course that primarily explores the structure and function of the human body and its systems. A detailed examination of these structures adequately prepares the student for further studies in the field of health, nursing and medicine. This class is an elective, and it is usually taken by juniors and seniors with a high proficiency in science.
