Global Youth Day: Youth Changing the World
Written by Vanessa Wilson
Sabbath, March 19th, the Seventh-day Adventist community at-large participated in the world’s largest service event. Under the auspicious of the Pennsylvania Conference and the Allegheny East Conference Corporation in conjunction with the Haitian and Hispanic congregations, lower Reading, Pennsylvania was targeted. Rehoboth Hispana SDA Church at 45 S. 6th Street, Reading, PA 19601 was the command post for this community initiative. The order of service began with a series of prayers and song rituals exalting allegiance to the Most High. The service ended with a resounding message rendered by AEC Hispanic Coordinator, Pastor Ramon Escalante titled: Jesus Is Coming Soon, Will You Be Ready?
The joint efforts of these conferences were nothing short of par excellence operating as ONE unit destined with the purpose of serving the same Master and heaven bound. Among the ably participants were AEC Communication Department, PFA teacher, students, PFC transient member, pastors, and pathfinders. An estimated 100 plus volunteers were instrumental in this service project. With (14) stations represented on street corners, passersby were able to collect clothing, shoes, toys, bags of food and a scrumptious meal. Health screenings inclusive of medical, vision, and dental; these services for many had been absent for years due to their homelessness.
The vision of GYD is to recapture the reality of Adventist youth as a global movement mobilized for service, contributing to the proclamation of the everlasting gospel and ushering in the second coming of Jesus Christ. There is a lot more to religious faith than simply going to church and listening to sermons. The true practice of religion involves the revelation of God’s love in living out Jesus’s gospel commission as He bade us to before He ascended to heaven: through all manners of selfless acts that point a desperately needy world to the ultimate hope of the better world He has made possible for us. Grounded in the concluding words of Jesus in the parable of the Good Samaritan, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:25-37), the theme of the Global Youth Day was “Be the Sermon.”
At the conclusion of the fair, several destitute recipients echoed the sentiment of establishing a relationship with Jesus following the in-kind services provided by the Seventh-day Adventist church affirming there is hope. We look forward to GYD 2017 where we hope to preach, teach, feed and clothe 2000 residents in Reading, Pennsylvania.
